‘Ume’ (Plum Blossom)

Komyo-ji Temple 光明寺

Passing through the main gate, lovely plum blossoms come into sight.

Hibariyama Seiren-ji Temple 日張山青蓮寺

In the temple ground stands a very old plum tree which is believed to have been planted by Princess Chujo in the Nara period (8th Century).

‘Sakura’ (Cherry Blossom) 

Ono-ji Temple 大野寺

The temple has two old weeping cherry trees, both of which are believed to be 300 years old.

Matabei Zakura 又兵衛桜 

This 300-year-old huge weeping cherry tree is named after a military commander ‘Matabei Goto’, who is believed to have lived in this area in the Sengoku period.

Uda River 宇陀川

The river is lined with cherry trees for about 2 km. The trees are lit up with paper lanterns in the evening.

Tenyaku-ji Temple 天益寺

This weeping cherry tree is believed to be 350 years old.

Inside the temple grounds stands a 300-year-old huge weeping cherry tree.

Torimiyama Park 鳥見山公園

Several kinds of cherry blossoms can be seen around Magatama Pond and the path to the mountain. They create a beautiful contrast against fresh green.

Goshin-ji Temple 悟真寺

This 200-year-old cherry tree is spreading out its branches like wings. As the temple is located on a high hill, you can look down on the village.

Saiko-ji Temple 西光寺

This 300-year-old weeping cherry tree is likely to be the parent tree of the one at Ono-ji Temple. The cherry tree and the ancient temple make a good contrast, which attracts photographers.

Butsuryu-ji Temple 佛隆寺

This 900-year-old cherry tree is the oldest in Nara, and has been designated as a natural monument. Being the subspecies of Edo-Higan Zakura and Yama Zakura, this tree is considered very important from an academic standpoint.

Uchimaki Kumin-no-Mori 内牧区民の森

From the observation deck, cherry blossoms look like a beautiful ‘sea of clouds’. You can also see the beautiful mountains including Mt. Torimi, Mt. Inasa, and Mt. Kaigahira.

Iwahashi-no-Sakura 岩端の桜

  The Hono River is lined with cherry blossoms for 1 km. Carp streamers flying over the cherry blossoms is a nice seasonal landscape.

 ‘Katakuri’ (Dog’s Tooth Violet)

Morino Medicinal Herb Garden 森野旧薬園‘

Katakuri’, or Japanese dog’s tooth violet, is considered to be the first sign of spring. Since this little lily-like flower has been getting hard to find throughout Japan today, it is rare to see so many Katakuri like in this garden.

‘Tsutsuji’ (Azalea)

Torimiyama Park 鳥見山公園

In spring, thousands of azaleas cover the mountain. The annual ‘Azalea Festival’ is held in early May.

This temple is known for its beautiful rhododendrons blooming in spring.

Benzaiten Rhododendron Hill 弁財天石楠花の丘

Located deep in Muro Village, Konpira Shrine is filled with a million rhododendron bushes that had been planted by the locals who wished to revitalize the village suffering from depopulation.

‘Suzuran’ (Lily of the Valley)

Mukoji ‘Suzuran’ Colony 向渕スズラン群落

Suzuran, the official flower of Uda City, is growing in colonies here in Mukoji. As the southern limit of its habitat, this place is designated as natural assets.

 ‘Sasayuri’ (Bamboo Lily)

Murou-Fukano ‘Sasayuri’ Protection Area 室生深野ササユリ保護区

Locals from this area have been protecting this endangered species of lilies. With its beautiful terraced rice fields, Fukano has been chosen as one of Japan’s 100 mountain villages.

Autumn

‘Higanbana’ (Cluster Amaryllis)

Butsuryu-ji Temple 佛隆寺

Every autumn, visitors flock to this temple to see a stunning red carpet of higanbana filling the both sides of the stone stairway to the temple.

Autumn Foliage

Muro-ji Temple 室生寺

Muro-ji is one of Uda City’s best spots for autumn foliage. Nio-mon Gate and Yoroi-zaka Slope look quite beautiful when surrounded with colored leaves. Night illumination is held during the foliage season.

Ono-ji Temple 大野寺

Across the Uda River stands a huge Magaibutsu (a huge Buddha figure carved on the rock). Japanese maple leaves look stunning when they are lit up by the setting sun.

Torimiyama Park 鳥見山公園

This park is associated with the mythology of Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan. In autumn, Magatama Pond looks beautiful with colored leaves.

Kaicho-ji Temple 戒長寺

Kaicho-ji Temple is known for its rare species of ginkgo tree called ‘Ohatsuki-icho’ (gingko nuts with leaves) which has been designated as a prefectural natural monument. A beautiful yellow carpet of gingko leaves is quite a sight.

Sakurami Shrine 桜実神社

In front of the shrine lies a huge Japanese maple tree which turns brilliant red in autumn. This shrine is known for its ‘Yatsufusa Sugi’, the 2000-year-old giant cedar. It is believed to have been planted by Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan.

Daigan-ji Temple 大願寺

Daigan-ji used to be a temple for the Oda clan to pray. A huge Japanese maple tree at the temple gate turns stunnning red. The temple’s restaurant offers medicinal herb cuisine.

Tokugen-ji Temple 徳源寺 

This temple is the family temple of the Uda Matsuyama Domain under the Oda clan. A five-ring pagoda (Oda family’s tombstone) stands in the temple ground.

Currently the load to the‘Gorinto’is closed due to a collapse.

 World Maple Park ‘Hirara’ カエデの郷ひらら

This park has 1200 kinds of maple trees collected from around the world. Colorful maple leaves make a great contrast against the old wooden schoolhouse.

Yamato-Fuji (Mt. Nukai) 大和富士(額井岳)

The shape of the mountain looks exactly like the kanji standing for ‘mountain’ (山).

Ryuchin Falls 龍鎮渓谷              

The falls look beautiful when leaves fall into the stream.
Ryuchin Shrine standing by the stream adds a sacred atmosphere to the waterfall.

The Buddha Stone Statues on Mt. Hirai-Taishi 平井大師山石仏群

Hirai-Taishi Temple is surrounded with a hundred stone figures of Buddha, most of which were created by a well-known stonemason, ‘Tanba-no-Sakichi’, together with his apprentices in the late Edo period.

Hibariyama Seiren-ji Temple 日張山青蓮寺

In the temple ground, a huge Japanese maple tree by the hanging bell is ablaze with red in autumn. Located deep within the mountain, this temple is a perfect place to get away from the bustle of everyday.

Taguchi Mikumari Shrine 田口水分神社

There is a huge ginkgo tree inside the shrine grounds. This shrine’s autumn festival features traditional ‘Shishi-mai’ (lion dance).

Winter

‘Robai’ (Winter Sweet)

Ono-ji Temple 大野寺

Robai is one of the few flowers that bloom in winter. As the name suggests, the flower features wax-like petals and has a sweet fragrance like ‘Ume’ (plum blossom).
